If you have some household items in your home that you haven’t used in a while, they could be valuable. Instead of tossing them or handing them down, you can earn and save cash.
1. Old electronics
At one time, many people shoved their old cellphones, computers and tablets into a closet until they junked them. Now, you can sell them online. You can do so through sites such as Gazelle, Decluttr and Craigslist. And there’s always eBay and Amazon.
Items that are eligible for the Amazon Trade-In program include Kindle e-readers, tablets, streaming media players, Bluetooth speakers including Echo devices, textbooks, phones, and video games.
Your local library and certain charities may welcome your donation of used books, but if you have textbooks, first editions or volumes from popular authors, you may be able to sell them online or to a local used bookstore.
For example, McKay’s Knoxville will buy used books. So does Declutter as well as Amazon. The website BookScouter can help you find out which buyer will give you the best price for a given book that you want to sell.
3. Unwanted gift cards
You can give away gift cards to stores or restaurants you don’t plan to patronize, but why not sell them for cash instead? You can do just that through gift card exchanges like Cardpool and Raise. They are online marketplaces through which you can sell your unwanted gift cards to people willing to buy them at a discount. You won’t get the full value, but you will get it in cash.
4. Used appliances
There is a real demand for old appliances including refrigerators, stoves, washers and dryers. There are landlords looking for appliances for student housing. This is one instance where you’ll likely need to rely on Craigslist or eBay for sales, but don’t forget Facebook Marketplace, a sometimes overlooked selling option.
5. Unwanted clothing
If you had an obsession with designer handbags some years back but now seldom carry them, or if you have slightly used clothes, rather than have them sit unused on a closet shelf, you can sell them. Planet XChange or Plato’s Closet in Knoxville are places to start. There is also the website Bag Borrow or Steal. Consignment sites for luxury goods include The RealReal and Material World.
