A man is in custody after police say he attacked an Athens police officer on Tuesday afternoon.

Around 3:30 p.m., officers were called to Palo Street in Athens for a report of a man chasing his parents up the street in a vehicle. According to police, when they arrived, they saw the man’s driving the wrong way down a one-way street. When they caught up to the car, they found it had been abandoned.

A short time later, one of the officers found the man, later identified as Jesse Moses, hiding in some bushes. Police say when she tried to arrest him, Moses attacked her, smashing her head into the ground. He then fled the scene, before being arrested by another officer.

During the investigation, officers discovered Moses was violating an order of protection that prohibited him from being around his parents. They also found a 15-year-old girl with him, who they discovered was a runaway from another county.

The officer suffered injuries to her face, but was released from the hospital later that day.

“Unfortunately it is not unusual for suspects to resist when officers take them into custody. This is a reality that officers live with. I commend these officers for
the courage and restraint that they showed in this situation. We are all obviously glad that this man was taken into custody and we pray for Officer Holmes’ speedy recovery.”

Moses is charged with assault, aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, evading arrest, resisting a stop, driving on a suspended license, violation of an order of protection and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
