Well known poet, activist, mother and professor Nikki Giovanni made her way back to her hometown of Knoxville on Friday.
She’s speaking at the Bijou Theatre on Friday night, but she visited Green Magnet Academy, just down the street from where she grew up, before her big appearance.
The kids have been reading through one of her popular poetry collections, “Vacation Time.” Giovanni stopped by to tell the kids to dream big and to reach for the stars.
“I’m always glad to remind these youngsters you’ve got to dream way beyond what we’re seeing now,” she said.
Giovanni has published 27 books in the last three decades, many of them reminiscent of her hometown of Knoxville.
She is set to deliver the 2018 Wilma Dykeman Stokely Memorial Lecture at the Bijou Theatre Friday night at 7.
