City moves closer to purchase of North Knoxville hospital site for safety complex

Local News

The city of Knoxville says it is preparing and is close to filing a letter of intent to purchase the site of the former Physicians Regional Medical Center in North Knoxville.

City spokesperson Eric Vreeland says it is a non-binding agreement and the city could still walk away from the deal. There is no contract yet to purchase the site.

The city has proposed spending $40 million on demolishing some buildings and retro-fitting others to use as headquarters for the police and fire departments and city court.

Vreeland says the city plans to build the safety complex on the southern end of the property, which will be more of a short-term project, while the northern property will be for more long-term projects.

A public meeting is scheduled Thursday at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the plans.

The former Tennova hospital closed at the end of 2018.
