Civil rights lawsuit dismissed in 2014 deadly shooting by Knoxville officer

A judge has granted a defense motion to dismiss a civil rights lawsuit in an encounter with police that turned deadly.

Dashcam video showed the moments leading up to the July 2014 shooting of Ronald Carden, who was helping a friend change a flat tire. The video shows Carden throwing punches. Carden and Knoxville Police Department Officer David Gerlach run off camera. Shots were fired and Carden was killed.

The case went to trial Monday, but court records show the judge agreed with a defense motion on Tuesday for a directed verdict, adjourning before the case went to the jury.
