The suspect in a shooting on Monday in Clinton has been charged with attempted second degree murder in Anderson County court.

Alex William Carter, 20, of Clinton, told investigators from the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department that he shot one of the two victims after an argument had ensued.

Court documents state Carter and the two victims, Nathan Gifford and Cierra Pyle, were at a residence on Leach Lane when they got into an argument and Carter left. About five minutes later, Carter returned and opened fire on Gifford and Pyle, firing several shots. Pyle was not struck. Gifford was, once in his stomach and once in his left leg. Carter then fled the scene.

Gifford was transported by ambulance to University of Tennessee Medical Center and was treated for his gunshot wounds. No update has been released on his current condition.

Carter was located at his home in Clinton by Clinton Police and sheriff’s department detectives brought Pyle to the location to identify him. Pyle confirmed Carter was the man who shot Gifford.

A Taurus PT22 handgun was located at the property that Carter indicated to detectives he had used. When asked about his whereabouts of the day and if he knew what occurred on Leach Lane, Carter told investigators, “you know what happened.”
