A Cocke County mother was arrested after she was found walking down the road in the rain carrying a 1-year-old who wasn’t wearing any clothes.
When deputies arrived to the scene, they put the two of them in the car and moved them to a safe place off the road. The woman said to hurry and take her to the Cub Motel because an airplane was coming to pick her and the child up.
The mother also said she had been assaulted, but would not say by whom. Deputies said it appears she was under the influence because her speech was slurred and she was very unsteady.
The Department of Children’s Services came to take custody of the child who was cold to the touch and wearing only a soiled diaper. One of the officers offered to take the child to his home until DCS took custody. The officer and his wife bought diapers, clothing and a sippy cup for the child, taking care of the child for around three hours.
It was eventually determined the mother was under the influence of narcotics and the child may have been exposed to narcotics as well. The child’s paternal family did not want to take custody, so the child went into DCS custody.
