Announcements were made Thursday that two competing pirate-themed attractions will be opening soon in Pigeon Forge.
Dolly Parton’s representatives announce a second Pirates Voyage dinner attraction would be opening in the spring. The original location is in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
“The show has been so successful in Myrtle Beach that we kept looking at Pigeon Forge and wondering why we didn’t already have a Pirates show there,” Parton said in a news release. “We have the perfect location, in one of the hottest areas of Pigeon Forge, and the time is now for my pirates to stake claim to the Great Smoky Mountains!”
The 21,000 square foot attraction will be adjacent to The Island in Pigeon Forge and will be the stage for Crimson and Sapphire pirates to battle on deck, in the water and in the sky above their full-sized pirate ships in a 15-foot-deep indoor lagoon.
Meanwhile, Fee Hedrick Entertainment, the people behind Smoky Mountain Opry, also announced a pirate-themed attraction called the Pirates Revenge Dinner and Show, set to open in summer 2019 in the current location of Smoky Mountain Opry.
The company is spending $20 million to renovate the building, including technology and a new kitchen. The production will include a retractable water stage, moving ships, actors, stunt divers, acrobats, singers, dancers and live animals.
CEO David Fee says plans have been in the works for more than a year.
“This is a Dolly town. It’s a Dollywood town. But we’ve done great for 25 years and we’ll still do great. There’s room for everybody and we love Dolly and we love Dollywood and wish them well. I’m sure they will have a fantastic show, they always do. And we will too,” said Fee.
The company says it hopes to keep the Smoky Mountain Opry show and move it to a new location to be announced a later date.
