The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man Monday night after an armed standoff.

Deputies were initially responding to a report of a suicidal man along Muddy Branch Lane in Crossville.

When deputies arrived to find Jesse Spivey, 54, sitting on the front porch with a gun to his head threatening to kill himself. A perimeter was set up and officers began negotiating with Spivey to surrender his weapon.

At one point, Spivey accidentally discharged his gun while attempting to light a cigarette but no one was injured.

Spivey agreed to surrender if he was allowed to speak to unnamed individuals on the phone.

He was later taken into custody and then taken to Cumberland Medical Center for a mental health evaluation.

Spivey has been charged with aggravated domestic assault and reckless endangerment after a family member said Spivey pushed him or her down, put his foot on their chest, pulled a knife and threatened them with it.

Spivey is being held on $27,000 bond.
