A Blount County deputy who shot and killed a Greenback man after the man charged at him with an axe on Sunday afternoon has been cleared to return to his job, according to Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong.

Just after 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Deputy Jarred Pekala was sent to a home on Emert Williams Road in the Lanier community after a family member of Brian Lee Rogers, 40, said he was acting erratically. When Pekala arrived at the scene, the sheriff said Rogers began chasing him with the axe.

Pekala put his patrol car in reverse and backed up about 320 feet, according to the sheriff. When he stopped, he warned Rogers to drop the weapon, but Roger continued to charge him. At that point, Berrong said Pekala fired his gun, striking Rogers multiple times.

Other deputies arrived and provided first aid to Rogers until paramedics arrived. Rogers was taken to Blount Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Pekala had been on administrative leave with pay since the incident, but will resume his duties next week.
