Despite government shutdown, GSMNP breaks attendance records

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park shattered visitation records despite January’s government shutdown.

Unlike previous shutdowns, the park remained open to visitors. The park worked on a skeleton crew, relying on volunteers for cleanups.

Visitation numbers were up by 30 percent.

Some campgrounds, picnic pavilions and cabins will open late for the season because of the shutdown.  A full list is available online.
