EAST TENNESSEE (WATE) – Law enforcement agencies across the country are honoring those who served during Wednesday’s National Peace Officer Memorial Day with ceremonies of remembrance.

It’s a time to honor and thank the law enforcement officers who died within the last year.

The Knoxville Police Department held its memorial ceremony Wednesday morning at its headquarters in Knoxville, ringing a bell for each name of officers who served.

The Oak Ridge Police Department held a special ceremony Wednesday outside the municipal building.

Officials saying these officers go out every day to try and help community members and often risk their lives doing so.

The officers honored today were not killed in the line of duty, but the agencies still recognizing that their lives were dedicated to serving and protecting others.
