Hurricane Florence bringing heavy rain to East Tennessee early next week

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) - Florence is still a MAJOR storm. Category 4 with no signs of weakening. The eye is still circular, the outer flow is still symmetrical and the waters in her path are very warm. That means Florence may strengthen even more today.

Latest Stats as of 5am: (Next update at 8am)
Category 4
Moving WNW @ 17mph
Max Sustained Winds: 130mph
Minimum Central Pressure: 946mb

Latest models are trending southward. As the 6 On Your Side Storm Team has been eluding to. With a drastic drop in speed as Florence approaches landfall, the southward trend may be a slow shift. That means rainfall could be historic. Areas along the North and South Carolina coasts could receive over 20" of rain. 40" isn't out of question. The National Hurricane Center saying, "this rainfall would produce catastrophic flash flooding and significant river flooding."

The slow hook northwest toward East TN should happen over the weekend. We're still hot and humid this weekend with rain arriving late Sunday into Monday. Our rainfall totals will range widely. The mountains will likely see the biggest impact with runoff. Some areas may stay under 1" of rain while others in the higher elevations see over 4"
