The Dandridge Fire Department says crews have completed an operation to transfer a hazardous chemical from one trailer to another at Loves Travel Center on exit 412 off Interstate 40.

Crews were expected to remain on scene for several hours to finish cleanup. No hazards or injuries were reported.

The fire chief says on Monday night, someone noticed a leaky valve on a trailer containing ethylenediamine. Crews attempted a repair on Tuesday, but were unsuccessful. A new trailer arrived on Wednesday and the transfer began.

Ethylenediamine is used in large quantities for production of many industrial chemicals. Liquid ethylenediamine will release toxic and irritating vapors into the air.

People were asked to avoid the area for several hours and air monitoring was conducted.
