Two 12-year-olds were taken into custody Tuesday afternoon after an off-duty Knox County deputy found them hiding inside a business they had allegedly just vandalized.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office says the off-duty officer was driving by and saw fire trucks at the former Weigel’s on Emory Road at Clinton Highway and pulled in. There were footprints and the back door had been forced open.

Deputies say the two boys were inside and so many fire extinguishers had been set off, it looked like smoke was coming from the building. There was no fire set, but officials say the boys turned over shelves, destroyed equipment, and used crowbars to pry open the metal door.

Both boys were taken to the Richard Bean Juvenile Detention Facility for questioning.
