Sunday morning a church service in Kingsport was cut short after a report of an abandoned suitcase in their parking lot.

According to Kingsport Police Department’s Public Information Officer, Tom Patton, officers were called to Pleasant View Baptist Church around 11 a.m. after that discovery was made by a representative of the church.

Patton said, “due to its suspicious nature and location, and out of an abundance of caution, the morning church activities dismissed early and the KPD bomb squad was called in to examine the suitcase.”

Once officials examined the suitcase, Patton said they determined the suitcase was not a threat and removed it.

He added that there was never any bomb threat or bomb scare and that the department’s actions were “purely precautionary in nature.”

Officers were on scene for about an hour, and church officials told News Channel 11 tonight they were given the all clear to hold their Sunday evening services.
