CORRYTON (WATE) – The Knox County Sheriff’s Office arrested an assault and robbery suspect Thursday thanks to a tip from a citizen who saw a news report on television.
Jeffrey Eric Smiddy, 38, was arrested in LaFollette Thursday on an aggravated robbery charge. More charges are pending.
The incident happened Tuesday night when a Corryton man said he was assaulted and robbed inside his home.
The 65-year-old victim said he arrived at his Shelton Road home around 11:30 p.m. when a stranger hit him in the head with a metal pipe and took items from the house. The victim was taken to the hospital to be treated for head wounds.
Media reports describing the victim’s silver 2008 Nissan Altima, which was taken in the robbery, prompted a citizen to recognize it and report it to the LaFollette Police Department. A police officer spotted it but lost sight of it. Later, the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office found the car near the home where Smiddy was arrested.
Deputies say all of the stolen items were recovered.
