Knox County gang member convicted of 1st degree murder

A man the Knox County District Attorney’s office says is a member of the Crips gang was convicted Wednesday of first degree murder.

Demorris Sanchez McKenzie, 28, was also convicted of unlawful possession of a firearm and driving on a revoked license. He was given an automatic life sentence for the murder conviction and sentencing is set for May on the other charges.

During the three-day trial, prosecutors said on February 26, 2016, McKenzie sold fake drugs to the victim at Ridgebrook Apartments. The two then got into an argument and McKenzie shot the victim in the abdomen with what prosecutors said was an assault rifle.

He then walked up to the victim, who was lying on the ground, and shot him two more times.

McKenzie has for prior felony convictions and is listed as a member of the Crips street gang. He must serve 51 years before he is eligible for parole.
