Changes will be coming to the athletic fields at South Doyle Middle School as officials nixed plans for a controversial BMX track.

The original plan was to install a BMX track at South Doyle but in March of last year, Knox County began raising concerns that it would cost too much.

Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs said Friday that installing a BMX track would actually inflate the cost of the entire project, three times over the amount budgeted for it.

The new developments planned include new soccer fields and the construction of a high-quality track with a shot put and discus circle.

The renovations will also include new bleachers, fencing, concessions and bathrooms.

Most of the construction won’t begin until school is out for the summer due to a request from the Knox County school system.
