Knoxville police: Suspected burglar dies after being shot during break-in

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) - A suspected burglar was killed early Thursday after Knoxville police say he was shot by one of the homeowners.

The Knoxville Police Department says they were called to a home in the 2400 block of Lamp Drive just before 1:30 a.m. They say a man, later identified as Christopher Austin Desmarais, 24, started beating on the door while trying to get into the house. When Desmarais was unsuccessful in getting in through the door, he tried to break in through a window while armed with a handgun.

Police say one of the homeowners fired a weapon, hitting Desmarais as he was coming into the house.

Desmarais was pronounced dead on the scene. He did not have any identification, but police were able to determine his identity following an autopsy.

Both homeowners were interviewed by police and released. The investigation is ongoing.
