Knoxville Police Department has issued a weekend-long traffic alert for drivers in the area due to ongoing roadwork along Interstate 40.
“Expect major traffic back-ups throughout the weekend on I-40E from downtown to East Knoxville for bridge repairs,” KPD tweeted out on Friday.

According to KPD, drivers traveling along I-40 in Knox County should watch out for lane closures for the weekend roadwork in Downtown Knoxville and East Knoxville.
Beginning 7 p.m. Friday, bridge repairs are happening along I-40 East at mile marker 389 over North Sixth Avenue.
The work will continue through the weekend, night and day, until Monday at 6 a.m.
The on-ramps from Hall of Fame Drive and James White Parkway to I-40E will be closed during this time, KPD says.
“Motorists should use extreme caution through this area as workers will be present,” KPD says. “This schedule is contingent on favorable weather conditions.”
The weather is forecasted to be nice and sunny (Saturday) and mostly cloudy (Sunday) this weekend, so drivers – know this roadwork is most likely happening on through Monday, when scattered showers are predicted.
