KPD: Person of interest identified in unprovoked attack on officer; witnesses sought

The Knoxville Police Department has identified and released a person of interest in the attack of a Knoxville police officer after the UT football game Saturday night 

A person of interest was identified and interviewed overnight. At the conclusion of the interview, the person of interest was released.

Investigators are still asking any witnesses to the incident to please contact the department 

The officer violently attacked was hit in the back of the head with a hammer or some type of blunt object.

One motorist sitting in traffic who witnessed the incident provided as much information as she could on the suspect. In addition, an off-duty out of county fire firefighter who had a medical bag in his personal vehicle immediately began rendering medical assistance to the officer. 

The officer suffered a serious head injury and had to undergo immediate surgery. The surgery went well and the officer is recovering. The officer is 51 years old and he has been with KPD for seven years. 

KPD says they believe there are witnesses to the attack since it happened towards the end of the game.
