Make-A-Wish brings Hollywood to Knoxville for young teen battling cancer

Local News

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – Evan is a young man from Knoxville battling cancer. His one true wish was to attend the Los Angeles premiere of the Marvel movie “Avengers: Endgame.”

“Evan is a local high school student and he wanted to go to the Avengers premiere but wasn’t cleared to do that,” said Make-A-Wish Foundation of East Tennessee CEO Garrett Wagley.

Though Evan’s medical condition prevented him from being cleared for travel, that didn’t stop his wish from coming true.

Since Evan couldn’t go to Hollywood, Make-A-Wish made sure Hollywood came to Evan, red carpet and all, highlighting the power of what one wish can bring.

“Wish is really powerful. It brings hope, strength, and joy to children who are battling critical illnesses. So it gives them sort of an inner fire to fight their condition,” said Wagley.

For a young boy battling cancer who just wants to watch the latest movie in his favorite series, Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” will give Evan that fire from within.

“This means a lot to Evan and us that he’s able to get out and see his friends and see the Avengers movie he’s been looking forward to,” said Evan’s mom, Tina Richey.

The presence of the press, photographers, and cameras all made Evan’s trip down the red carpet over the top.

“This has been months in the planning stages just getting all this coordinated. We’re just very grateful to be here and for Evan,” Richey said. “I think anything to lift his spirits helps with his well-being and makes him feel better, so it has to be a good thing to see all his friends and everything.”

Evan’s wish was made a reality thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of East Tennessee, which grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.

If you would like to donate, the money stays local to help children in the East Tennessee region.
