A Maryville man is in jail after police say he crashed his vehicle through a guardrail and ended up in the lake near the George’s Creek boat ramp in Blount County, where he tried to swim away from deputies.

Brandon Michael Aguirre, 25, fled from an Alcoa police officer on Thursday, according to Blount County Sheriff James Berrong. Aguirre was spotted by a deputy, who attempted to stop him. However, the sheriff said Aguirre sped away, weaving in and out of traffic, nearly causing several crashes.

The pursuit continued west on Topside Road, where Aguirre swerved into a grassy embankment and overcorrected. His car struck a guardrail and landed in the lake.

The sheriff said Aguirre got out of his vehicle and tried to swim away from shore. Deputies borrowed a boat from a nearby fisherman and were able to arrest Aguirre.

Aguirre is charged with reckless endangerment, evading arrest and theft of property. He remains in the Blount County jail on $51,000 bond.
