COSBY, Tenn. (WATE) – One man is dead and another man is in custody following an alleged domestic dispute that escalated to a shooting.
According to the Cocke County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were dispatched to a residence on Hooper Highway Friday afternoon on a report of a man that had been shot. When deputies arrived, they found John Paul Dunn, 36, of Newport, seated in a vehicle in the driveway of the residence, with a single gunshot wound.
“Officers recovered a weapon believed to have been used from the scene,” a press release states. “Deputies secured the scene and immediately started to render aid by pulling Dunn from the vehicle and starting first aid until EMS arrived on scene. EMS loaded Dunn and transported him to the Newport Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.”
Initial investigation results revealed how the incident occurred, in that Dunn’s stepfather, Olin Hellard, 63, of Cosby, allegedly shot Dunn after Dunn refused to leave his parents’ property. Dunn had allegedly been in a verbal and physical altercation with his mother prior to Hellard’s intervention.
“Olin (Hellard) stated that he went to take a nap when he heard a commotion and looked outside to find that Patty (Dunn’s mother) and Dunn were in a verbal and physical altercation about Dunn leaving the residence,” CCSD’s release states. “They had asked him to leave several times but he had refused. (Hellard) then took a 12-gauge shot gun and went outside to confront Dunn and make him leave the property.”
Investiators say Hellard asked Dunn to leave, but Dunn allegedly got into his vehicle and started up the driveway, then stopped, turned back down the driveway to where Hellard was and said he wasn’t leaving and asked Hellard what he was going to do about it.
Hellard then pointed the shot gun at Dunn and shot him, investigators say.
Hellard was taken into custody and transported to the Cocke County Annex. He has been criminally charged with second degree murder.
