The city of Oak Ridge announced Tuesday Deputy Chief Robin Smith, who has been acting police chief since August, has been promoted to chief of police.
Smith has been with the department since 2012, first serving as a lieutenant, then as captain and finally as deputy chief. Prior to his work with Oak Ridge, Smith was commander of police operations for the Tennessee Valley Authority. He began his law enforcement career in 1979 with the Sevierville Police Department.
“I believe the community will benefit from Chief Smith’s desire to coach our officers to an even higher level of professionalism. I want to congratulate Robin Smith and welcome him to the professional management team of this city,” said City Manager Mark Watson.
Former Police Chief James Akagi announced his retirement in August after being placed on administrative leave during an investigation into allegations against him that have not yet been made public.
