One person is dead following a house fire Thursday night on Chapman Highway, according to Knoxville Fire Department.

The house fire happened around 7:11 p.m. on the 5400 block of Chapman Highway.

A caller reported hearing a loud explosion and then seeing flames in the woods. KFD says that firefighters had a difficult time reaching the home due to steep gravel and a mud driveway, which was a quarter-mile up the side of the mountain. Firefighters struggled to stretch the water supply from Locust Hill.

Fire crews snaked hose lines through the woods to the structure, by the time they reached the home it was engulfed in flames.

A third search of the home for possible victims and found one victim. The person’s identity has not been released at this time.

The home is a total loss. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
