Person in custody after garage fire at boarded-up Knoxville house

One person was taken into custody after a fire at a boarded-up house in Knoxville.

The fire was reported around 1:30 p.m. Thursday on Ruggles Ferry Pike just south of Asheville Highway. A neighbor said her son spotted the fire.

She said the house had been boarded up, but someone was inside and she worried that the smoke and flames could have killed him or her.

“With that smoke billowing out, we didn’t know what was going on. So we called. That was our concern. Our firemen and policemen came, and I’m just forever grateful for them. I don’t care what anybody says. They’re here when you need them. We’re very appreciative, very appreciative,” said Meredith Douglas.

The Knoxville Fire Department says the fire was in the garage. No one was hurt, but one person was
