Police seeking stolen church van as tips come in on possible sightings

Local News

The search continues for a church van stolen from First United Methodist Church in Pigeon Forge last week.

Thanks to Facebook, lots of tips are coming in.

The van disappeared last Wednesday night from the church.

Children and Youth Director Scott Burnette walked us through the sequence of events involving an apparent visitor to the church.

“It appears that he stayed after the service, hid in one of the rooms until everyone was gone and then kind of went around looking for cash or whatever he could take, and then found those keys and then ultimately took the van,” Burnette told us. “Nothing about him that set off any alarms in my brain.”

We talked with Pigeon Forge Police Chief Richard Catlett by phone, who told us a couple Facebook tips on van sightings in South Carolina may be promising. His investigators are following up.

In the meantime, the church is feeling the loss of that well traveled van, especially when it comes to the childrne it serves.

“We pick up lots of kids on Wednesday night from the Boys and Girls Club and different places like that,” Burnette said, “We do different ministries with it.”

True to the church’s teachings, Burnette says he has a message for the suspect.

“Numerous people asked for prayer for him this Sunday because I think there is an understanding that, hey, you’ve got to be pretty desperate to do something like that.”

If you know anything about this stolen van, call Pigeon Forge Police at 865-453-9063.
