Possible pipe bomb ‘rendered safe’ in Jefferson County

Local News

A busy road was closed in Strawberry Plains after the Jefferson County sheriff says a possible pipe bomb was found.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says a pipe-type device was found at the base of an AT&T distribution box near Strawberry Plains United Methodist Church on Old Andrew Jonson Highway around 2 p.m.

Nearby residents were advised to shelter in place and one person was evacuated. Nearby Rush Strong School was put on shelter in place as well.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad was called to the scene and used a robot to remove the device, take it to a nearby field and render it safe.

The device has been sent to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for analysis.

Old Andrew Johnson Highway has since reopened.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at (865) 397-9411.
