Preparation underway for Christmas in the City

Local News

The City of Knoxville is getting into the holiday spirit. A lot of work is underway in downtown to prepare for the thousands of people who will gather for the Regal Celebration of Lights next week.

Crews have been busy getting ready for the Christmas season.

“They’re finishing up the big 42-foot tree on Gay Street. The lights are pretty much wrapped in Krutch Park,” said Judith Foltz, the City of Knoxville’s Director of Special Events.

Preparing for Christmas in the City is a big production that involves tens of thousands of lights and decorations.

It all kicks off the day after Thanksgiving.

“Fireworks, snow, it’s always a great experience and Santa’s there as well,” said Foltz.

The city’s tree lighting is just one of the traditions to have fun. Construction is wrapping up on the Historic Market Square ice skating rink and families can come out on Black Friday.

Foltz adds, “People can come down and dine, do some shopping, let the kids skate.”

With people lacing up their skates all the way into January, the rink is set up around local businesses and it’s bringing more people through doors.

Also, outside of each establishment you can go in for a treat along the Peppermint Trail.

Austin Ferver, a barista at Coffee & Chocolate said, “It’s always neat because they’ll set up the sidewalk stickers where people can come and follow the trail, see what new things they have.”

Inside Coffee & Chocolate, you’ll find some goodies worth trying.

“We have a few coming out just for the holidays. Like our peppermint truffle, our gingerbread, and our little snowmen which are popular,” said Ferver.
