The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation announced plans to launch a food waste program with a pantry at Roane State Community College.
A representative from the department said the program addresses multiple needs.
It helps college students who are experiencing food insecurity. It also addresses the issue of too much of our food going to waste.
Food for the pantry comes from donations as well as bulk purchasing. Just over fifteen percent of the food is rescued through Second Harvest Food Bank and would have otherwise gone to a landfill.
