Search called off for possible second missing swimmer in Walland

Local News

The Blount County Sheriff’s Office has called off a search for a possible second missing swimmer at Peery’s Mill Dam in Walland.

Deputies recovered a drowning victim, Ty Christopher Berry, 33, of Maryville on Wednesday evening. He was pronounced dead at Blount Memorial Hospital.

The sheriff’s office was called to Peery’s Mill around 7:15 p.m Wednesday. When they arrived, the Blount County Fire Department was already on the scene and giving Berry CPR. He was then taken by ambulance to the hospital where he died.

A witness told deputies he saw two men go into the water. A dive team and others had been searching but a second victim was never found.

Authorities called off the search Thursday after no concrete evidence or tips from another witness that another person was in the water.

A Blount County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said officers used a helicopter to search the river several times, but didn’t spot anything. A kayaker also floated down both sides of the river for several miles and didn’t find any sign of a second swimmer. The spokesperson also said they have no reports of missing persons.

If anyone saw someone else with Ty Berry on Wednesday, they are asked to call dispatch at (865) 983-3620.
