A suspect is in custody after a shooting Friday afternoon at a Knoxville apartment complex, but the search is continuing for two others.
La-Drey Ya’Wonn Gross, 20, is charged with attempted second degree murder, especially aggravated robbery, especially aggravated burglary theft of property (vehicle), driving on a revoked license, driving while license suspended and simple possession.
The shooting happened on Friday, February 8, at Vista Apartments, 1115 East Hill Avenue. A woman was taken to the hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot injury to her leg. Police determined the victim and suspect knew each other.
Around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Knoxville Police Department officers spotted a Buick LeSabre on Western Avenue with a broken driver’s side window. The vehicle matched the description of the suspect wanted in the Vista Apartments shooting.
Officers stopped the LeSabre at the intersection of Middlebrook Pike and Old Weisgarber and discovered it had been reported stolen. There was an odor of marijuana coming from the car, police said, and a small baggie and a rolled, burnt blunt were found in the car. Officers also found two open bottles of alcohol.
The driver, Gross, was found to be driving on a license that was revoked in 2017.
Police believe Gross and two additional suspects entered the victim’s apartment and demanded drugs before the shooting. Police are still looking for two male suspects, one of whom is a juvenile.
