Suspect charged after alleged accidental shooting in Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – The Knoxville Police Department is investigating what was reported as a shooting in the 5500 block of Melstone Road. 

Police were called to the 5500 block of Melstone Road Wednesday just before 4 p.m. where they found a man with a gunshot wound.

The victim, Andy Thompson, 24, is believed to have been shot by Justin Hudgins, 21, as Hudgins was showing Thompson a gun.

The shooting appears to be accidental but the investigation is ongoing.

Thompson was taken to UT Medical Center with serious injuries.

Hudgins has been charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.

The residential area is located off Merchant Drive in the Pleasant Ridge area of Knoxville.
