Sweetwater house fire leaves one man dead

Local News

One man is dead following a Saturday night house fire in Sweetwater.

Sweetwater Police and Fire Departments responded to the fire around 7 p.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the roof of the house was fully engulfed in flames.

After battling the fire, and stopping it from spreading to nearby homes; the firefighters entered the structure where they found one deceased adult male. No one else was in the home at the time of the fire.

“At first it just kind of looked like a bonfire, but then it was the whole side of the porch. It moved really quickly though,” said neighbor Heather Mashburn.

Mashburn and her mom first spotted the fire, and she said she called 911.

“I tried to get to the house, but the doors were boarded up on the side. I couldn’t get in the front door,” she said.

Neighbors described the scene as scary and sad.

“There were a lot of flames. You could see it coming out the ends of the house under the tin,” said Darlene Pope. “As soon as they turned the water back down, the flames would shoot up through the roof again.”

“It’s just really sad to look over there and see all that damage and know that a life was lost. It’s really sad,” said Sharon Mashburn.

Detective Kevin Watson with Sweetwater Police called the Tennessee Bomb and Arson Squad to the scene.

This is still an ongoing investigation and we will update you as we get more information.
