KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – A Knoxville motorcyclist was killed Thursday evening after losing control and crashing into a barrier on Interstate 275.

James S. Derrick, 36, was killed in the crash, according to the Knoxville Police Department.

Witnesses said Derrick was traveling south on I-275 in the right lane when he lost control and struck the inside barrier. The motorcycle flipped and landed in the northbound lanes, where he was struck by an SUV traveling in the center lane, police said.

The wreck happened at 6:08 p.m. between the Woodland and Heiskell exits. After the crash, the northbound lanes of I-275 were shut down for the reconstruction and re-routed. One Southbound lane also was shut down. All lanes were re-opened at 8:20 pm.
