KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – A man was convicted Tuesday of trying to rob a South Knoxville dollar store last year using a flashlight.
Randy Lee Woody, 51, was convicted of attempted aggravated robbery and assault. Sentencing is set for May 31.
Prosecutors said Woody entered the Dollar General store on Circle Oak Drive on January 26, 2018, and demanded money. He was armed with what appeared to be a handgun but was actually a flashlight wrapped in electrical tape.
The clerk and manager realized the gun was fake and forced Woody out of the store without any money.
Woody has three prior convictions for aggravated robbery with an actual deadly weapon and second degree murder. He faces a punishment of six to 10 years.
