A big interstate project in West Knoxville kicked off Friday night and it will cause delays all weekend, as well as for the next several weekends to come.
A section of Interstate 40 between mile markers 380 and 385 have been reduced to two lanes in each direction for bridge repair work. This is basically from the West Hills area to just inside the I-640 interchange.
To add to this headache, I-40 westbound at the I-640 Interchange, near mile marker 385, will be reduced to one lane. This is going to cause some lengthy westbound backups this weekend.
To avoid the delays, the Tennessee Department of Transportation suggests taking I-640 westbound, which will take you onto I-40 just west of that overpass work.
Work should wrap up by 6 a.m. Monday, but starts again next Friday night.
