MORRISTOWN (WATE) – A Whitesburg man is charge with stealing from the Morristown-Hamblen Humane Society.

Chris Collins, 40, was indicted by a grand jury with theft over $10,000.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says a May 2013 audit by the Comptroller’s Office revealed more than $50,000 was missing from the Morristown-Hamblen Humane Society.

Agents learned from July 1, 2009 to October 31, 2011, receipts had been altered and funds were not deposited into the agency’s back account.

The TBI says their investigation led them to believe Collins was responsible for the missing funds. He is no longer employed by the Humane Society.

He was released from the Hamblen County Jail Wednesday after posting $30,000 bond.
