MEDIC makes emergency appeal for blood donors

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Medic Regional Blood Center said for the first time in more than a year they are making an emergency appeal for blood donors.

The blood center said between an increased demand for blood at area hospitals and snow and ice forcing the closure of more than three dozen blood drives they are critically low on supplies.

“During the past week, MEDIC has seen a spike in the amount of blood needed by our local hospitals,” said MEDIC spokesperson Benjamin Prijatel. “Donating blood only takes about 45 minutes, and the blood you give will go to help someone in one of 22 East Tennessee-area counties.”

Donors with O negative blood are needed immediately, but Prijatel said inventory is low on all blood types.
