KNOXVILLE (WATE) – A Whittle Springs Middle School student was taken to the hospital Monday afternoon after being hit by a vehicle.

The accident happened around 3:40 p.m. on Whittle Springs Road at Fairmont Boulevard, near the school. The Knoxville Police Department says several students were walking home when Jameela Dompier, 12, darted across Fairmont Boulevard. Witnesses said she only looked for vehicles in one direction instead of both directions before stepping out into the street.

She was in the crosswalk, but vehicles on Fairmont has a green light. Dompier was hit by a 2003 Cadillac driven by Tony Jackson, 24. Dompier was taken to UT Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Jackson was cited for not having a driver’s license or proof of insurance. He was not injured.
