‘Peyton Manning’ among new golden retrievers in Knoxville from Turkey

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Four more golden retrievers from Turkey have arrived in Knoxville. The dogs were taken in by Adopt a Golden Knoxville, which will now find new homes for the pets.

“They are the Rocky Top dogs – Pat Summitt, Butch Jones, Holly Warlick and Peyton Manning,” explained Jaime Thomas, with the non-profit that rescues goldens.

Shortly after Peyton Manning was named, the Broncos won the Superbowl, so he could be someone’s lucky charm. The dogs were being bathed and vaccinated on Monday.Previous story: Knoxville rescue saves golden retrievers from Turkey

“We’re excited to have them here. They’re all great dogs. Happy to be here. Just happy dogs,” Johnson said.

The first set of dogs arrived in Knoxville in December. Golden retrievers used to be a status symbol in Turkey, but when that fad passed, many of them ended up without a home.\

“Some of them were in the streets and forests. They don’t euthanize there,” Johnson added.

Johnson says Adopt a Golden can use all the help they can get.

“Donations are the biggest thing. We don’t have our own facility, we run with fosters and we run with donations,” she said.
