Kroger joins our Project GRAD Telethon gifting laptops to students

Positively Tennessee

More support is coming in for our Project GRAD Laptop initiative.

While the Project GRAD Knoxville program helps students in the inner city with college or technical school scholarships, there’s no room in the budget for laptops.

Our first Project GRAD Laptop Telethon last year was a huge success: All 88 qualifying students received one.

Now, we’re doing it again, and we’re thrilled to have Kroger on board.

Two laptop recipients from last year’s Project GRAD class came by a local Kroger store to say thank you to store manager Marty Irwin and Melissa Eads from Kroger’s Corporate office.

Isabella Francisco and Kavien Persons have put their laptops to good use at Pellissippi State Community College. They recieved theirs back in August after completing all of the Project GRAD requirements and providing proof of their college enrollment.

Isabella has plans for a career in interior design.

“They’re a big help for making this more realistic for everyone else to have the same future I have.”

Kavien wants to have a career in sports medicine. He’s getting through school on scholarship money and a job. Having a laptop has made all the difference.

“You can really do your homework anywhere,” Kavien says. “Instead of having to cram all of your homework and get all your stuff done before the school campus closes down at 7, you can start it at school and go home and finish it before your deadlines.”

Jasmine Siler is on staff at Project GRAD Knoxville, helping students navigate their pathways to post secondary education.

Her message to Kroger: “Just to see that by their support, really encouraging these students to go to college because a lot of them feel like ‘if I don’t have the main necessities’ which, laptops are one of them, they get discouraged in going, ‘How am I going to be able to do my homework?’ Or they say more pressure, or funding might have to come from their family which they might not have.”

Marty Irwin told us, “Kroger is so happy to partner with Project GRAD and supply these laptops that are needed for their education.”

Thank you, Kroger, for your part in helping Project Grad students achieve their dreams.

Our WATE 6 On Your Side Project GRAD Laptop Telethon is March 28th from 6am to 6:30 pm.
