OAK RIDGE (WATE) – A man on the violent sex offender list for aggravated rape and sexual battery was arrested and charged with stealing mail from an Oak Ridge church and being on the grounds of a child care facility.

Gregory Scott Tyree, 47, of Oak Ridge was arrested and charged with misdemeanor theft.

Oak Ridge Police Department officers said they were dispatched to Heritage Fellowship Church, located at 121 North Illinois Avenue in Oak Ridge at 8:50 a.m. Tuesday.

Officers said they spotted Tyree fleeing on Robertsville Road near Willowbrook Elementary School.

Tyree was arrested and transported to Anderson County Detention Facility.

Further investigation by Oak Ridge Police Department revealed Tyree was a registered violent sex offender from an incident in 1994.

The Heritage Fellowship Church includes a day care center with a plainly visibly playground. Oak Ridge police found Tyree was of sex offender registry law by being on the grounds.

On Wednesday, Oak Ridge police filed an additional charge of felony violation of the sex offendor registry and placed Tyree at the Anderson County Jail. He remains in custody awaiting his arraignment.
