KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Let the countdown begin. Runners are preparing for this year’s Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon starting April 2.
The two day event will begin with a 5K and a kid’s run on April 2. The day’s event will begin at 5:30 p.m. Also, a half-marathon, marathon, and two-person and four-person relay will be on April 3. Sunday’s events will start at 7:30 a.m. Participants will recieve a shirt, bib, timing chip and a goody bag at the Knoxville Convention and Exhibition Center beforehand.Related:Thousands enjoy racing in the 11th Annual Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon
A Health and Fitness Expo will take place on April 2, as well. The free event will take place at the Knoxville Convention and Exhibition Center from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Visitors can buy footwear, apparel and try free samples of food and drinks from more than 60 vendors. Former University of Tennessee football player Inky Johnson was speak at the event at 4 p.m.
Pasta lovers can attend a dinner supporting Girls on the Run of Greater Knoxville. The organization strives to lift self-esteem and teach good fitness skills in young girls. Girls train for a 5K run each season. The pasta dinner will be at 6:30 p.m. on April 2 at the Holiday Inn Downtown Knoxville. Supporters can buy tickets online. The marathon is hoping for more than 1,200 people to volunteer. To lend a helping hand, volunteers can sign up on the Knoxville Marathon website. Helpers will receive a t-shirt and access to an appreciation party at Calhoun’s on the River.
Early registration of the marathon ends March 28. There will be a limited amount of entries available on April 2. Depending on the event, registration costs between $20-$90. To register, visit the race’s website.
A pre-race pasta dinner fundraiser hosted by Girls on the Run of Greater Knoxville, a local non-profit for girls in third through fifth grades, will be held Saturday, April 2, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Holiday Inn World’s Fair Park. Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for children. Guest speaker will be WATE 6 On Your Side Anchor Kristin Farley.
