KNOXVILLE (WATE) – As spring arrives more businesses are looking to add some people to their payroll. Several companies are doing some seasonal hiring.
People are digging up their yards, putting in landscaping and getting ready to enjoy the outdoors, and that means stores like Lowe’s are seeing a jump in business.
“It’s been incredible. Spring is a great time to get outside. People want to be outside doing plants, starting projects for decks down in lumber. The whole store sees an increase in sales,” said Ken Dalton, Associate Store Manager of the Lowe’s on South Mall Road in Knoxville.
To meet that demand they are looking for some seasonal employees, nearly 1900 statewide and a few hundred here in the Knoxville area.
“We’re about halfway through that process. We started early. We saw that there was going to be a huge demand this spring and the unemployment rate was low. So we went ahead and started early,” said Dalton.
Similarly, Home Depot is looking for employees. They need about 180 of them in the Knoxville area. It is a trend many businesses see this time of year.
“It’s a good sign that the economy is definitely improving, more employers are looking for jobs,” said Tim Witt, Regional Director of the Tennessee Career Center in Knoxville.
Witt says they have seen a sharp increase in the number of businesses looking to hire.
“From caregiver, to KUB has some openings that’s coming up with the linemen and various types of customer service representatives, and we have several jobs in between paying anywhere from $7.50 to $18.00 an hour,” he said.
It gives the companies some extra help and more opportunities to those looking for work.
“In the springtime we get so many more customers, so many new faces in the store that are shopping every day so we want to make sure they get great customer service when they come to the store,” said Dalton.
The Tennessee Career Center is hosting a job fair on Wednesday. They say it is one of the largest one they have had with more businesses signing up, and they expect to see a few hundred applicants.
It is at 9 a.m. at 2700 Middlebrook Pike, Suite 100. There will be a variety of job opportunities with all levels of requirements.
