Second Harvest of East Tennessee helps Sevier County fire victims

ALCOA (WATE) – Every year WATE 6 On Your Side takes part in “Double Your Donation Day” telethon to help Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee.

This year, a record $520,000 was raised Monday during the telethon. All donations up to $200,000 were matched by several anonymous donors. Second Harvest hopes to provide over 1.5 million meals to the hungry this winter and needs the donations to do so, but they are also helping out in Gatlinburg.

“When there is a disaster in our service area, and we service 18 counties, we are activated to store food for that disaster area,” said Elaine Streno, second Harvest’s Executive Director. “We have about four tractor-trailer loads worth of food and other such items that have been donated to help the needy and we’re just going to just store it to them, because it’s such crazy chaos up there right now.”

Streno said Second Harvest of East Tennessee is thrilled to be able to help out.

“Definitely the need in Sevier County has been accelerated, because so many people lost their jobs and their homes, so we are providing more food to them than normal and hopefully that will dissipate a little bit over the new few months.”
