ATHENS, Tenn. (AP) — Authorities say a woman was killed when the driver of her car tried to cross in front of an oncoming McMinn County deputy’s patrol vehicle.

News outlets report 56-year-old Linda Greer was in the passenger seat and not wearing a seat belt when the cars collided and her car rolled over into a ditch on Wednesday.

McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy says Deputy Ashley McClendon was driving on Congress Parkway in Athens when 60-year-old Frankie Greer tried to cross the roadway.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol tweeted that the passenger could have survived had she buckled up. The sheriff said McClendon and Frankie Greer were hospitalized with minor injuries.

The crash is being investigated by Highway Patrol.
