Tennessee General Assembly passes permitless carry bill

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) — State lawmakers have passed a bill to allow Tennesseans to carry a handgun without a carry permit.

The Tennessee House voted 64-29 on Monday to pass House Bill 786.

The bill was backed by Republican Gov. Bill Lee, who listed constitutional carry as one of his 2021 priorities.

Some law enforcement agencies, including the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and Tennessee Sheriff’s Association, opposed the legislation.

The bill now heads to the governor’s desk.
